We had gathered for our second Europe-wide Advent Zoom call. The topic was: ‘Entrusted to yourself!’ Young people from Albania, Germany, Greece, Kosovo, Norway, Romania, Syria, the Czech Republic and Ukraine joined in. Halyna had talked about how she tried to take control of her own life moment by moment in everyday life in war-torn Ukraine. Edita from Kosovo had reported how she had given an unapproachable patient a special portion of love and how afterwards he always had been very friendly towards her. Experiences were shared with great simplicity and depth. Shortly before the end of the programme, one participant let me know: ‘Tonight I had to think of Heiner, this old priest who died over 20 years ago. His last act of love was to willingly hold out his arm to an unfriendly nurse for an injection. And then he had said: ‘We can always love!’ - This quote touched me deeply and I realised that love alone outlasts all time!
