I had just prepared breakfast for my mother and myself when a care assistant arrived, who visits once a week. We immediately turned our attention to her. She seemed a little depressed and told us about her work at the food bank, where more and more people were coming to get food. A little boy had come and asked for a carrot. She was happy to give the boy the carrot. ‘You can take two!’ she encouraged him. The little boy shyly asked, ‘Can I take five, so I have something for my break every day at school?’ We were all very moved by this experience. When the young woman left after fifteen minutes, I gave her a bag full of mandarins. ‘What a gift!’ she exclaimed. ‘I have to drive for over an hour after work today because I have to pick up an injection for my slipped disc. So I'll be home late and haven't eaten anything yet. Now I have vitamins for the whole day!’ We said goodbye with joy in our hearts.
