On a underground platform, my attention was drawn to a young man. I noticed that another younger man of Asian appearance was trying to avoid him. The first man said a few abusive words, causing the stranger to walk away fearfully. ‘Oh, those foreigners, did he bother you too?’ the young man asked me. I looked at him in surprise and saw in his eyes that he was on drugs. ‘No, quite the opposite!’ I replied. His comments became generalised and aggressive. ‘They should all get lost and go home!’ ‘For God's sake,’ I replied, ‘then our whole country would collapse. And I have many friends who were born in other countries and who have enriched me greatly with their way of being! The young man looked at me with wide, astonished eyes. ‘That's one way to look at it!’ he replied. Then he held out his hand and said, ‘You've helped me a lot today!’
