In her final year at school, she had heard about the opportunity to do a voluntary social year at a youth centre in Sarajevo. After gathering plenty of information and preparing for a long time, she set off. At Christmas, she came home to her family for a few days. We met up to chat. I listened captivated to her experiences and was amazed at how much she had grown during those months. She had learned to be aware of herself and to find out what she needed for a balanced life in terms of relationships and time for herself. I remembered her as timid, silent and rather shy, but now I found her to be reflective, talkative and full of drive. As we said goodbye, she said to me, ‘Even though it's very nice at home, I'm now looking forward to going back to Sarajevo!’ How wonderful that she had the courage to get up and go after finishing school.
