I had set off for Steyl with three young women to attend an international European youth encounter. We had a lively discussion about what we can do to find inner peace with ourselves and with God again and again. Having found this peace, the task was to ‘make room in our hearts for our neighbour’ – that was the topic of the day. When, on the way back, I asked what the day had meant to my three companions, one of them replied: “We were in a small group with German-speaking young people. Only one girl from Portugal didn’t understand German. It was immediately clear to everyone that they would continue speaking in English so that no one felt left out. A blind girl was also always in everyone’s sight, so that she could be completely included. This attentiveness towards one another really impressed me.”
