The great presence

‘Sad news’ - I read in an email. A young woman has died unexpectedly. The following days are characterised by disbelief, incomprehensibility, tears and a lot of shared life. I read the question of whether I could hold the funeral. I say yes. In all the irreality that still characterises the situation even a week after the death, a hopeful and uplifting celebration of the resurrection succeeds and takes place. Afterwards, over coffee, I sit down with young female students from the flat share of the deceased. They begin to talk. ‘Nobody could listen as well as our friend. When I told her something, she was always completely there. She never looked at her watch, so there was no time pressure. I had the impression that she was completely there for me. And so I was able to confide a lot of personal information in her!’ Like on Tabor, I thought. Jesus was fully present in prayer. He was completely there. And in this presence rooted in the moment, God - in the cloud - is suddenly there - with everything that was and is and will be. A light shines in which everything is connected in love. And in addition to the hidden God, my impression is that there are also those who have already crossed the doorstep of death and remain connected to us.
